VoIP: Getting started with the Speedtouch 780 Router

Note: to set up the router and VoIP service, you will need to have both the VoIP details from your welcome message, and the broadband connection details from your ADSL service provider (also likely to be provided in a welcome message).

Installing your Speedtouch 780 r router for VoIP

  1. Unpack the router, filter and cables and plug them together as follows:

    1. Plug the grey ADSL cable into the router’s DSL socket at one end, and into the ADSL socket of the filter at the other. Plug the filter into your ADSL-enabled phone socket.
    2. You can later connect other PCs (for example) into the other Ethernet sockets, and analogue/VoIP phones – but for now, keep it simple!
    3. Connect and plug in the power cable.
  2. Switch the power on and leave the router to initialise for a minute or two.
  3. Run the setup CD provided on the connected PC, and follow the instructions there to set up the connection to the router, including your ASDSL username and password etc. During the setup, you’ll need to make the last physical connection when prompted:

Connect a PC to one of the Ethernet sockets, using the yellow network cable. Alternatively: use the blue USB cable to make a USB connection, or if you have the necessary hardware, you can use wireless.

  4. Then you’ll get VoIP related screens to complete.

On the Voice Connection Settings screen you need to fill in the Proxy address and the Registrar address as notified by us.

In the Voice Account settings screen, enter your Telephone number and User name, both of which are the first extension number on your Centrex service, and your Password from your welcome email.

  5. Complete the rest of the screens then your router should be ready for use with our service.
  6. Then you can connect a phone to one of the phone sockets (not the one marked PSTN, which provides non-VoIP telephone backup). You might want to check the service: dial 160 and make sure that you can hear your own voice echoed back to you.
