VoIP: Getting started with the Grandstream 2000 VoIP phone

Installing your Grandstream VoIP phone

Note: to use a VoIP phone on the Centrex service, you must have a router connected to your ADSL line. A USB modem will not work!

  1. Unpack the phone and cables and plug them together as follows:
    1. Connect the base unit and handset together using the curly phone cable; it plugs into the socket on the left side (seen from the top).
    2. Connect the Ethernet socket marked LAN to one of the sockets on your router, using the coloured network cable. (Or if you have a hub or switch inboard of the router, use that.)
    3. If you don’t have enough network sockets, you can connect a PC (for example) into the second socket.
    4. Connect and plug in the power cable.
    5. If you have a headset, connect it to the socket at the right.

  2. Switch the power on and leave the phone to initialise for a minute or two.
    • If you have your network set up to hand out IP addresses (using DHCP), the phone will pick up an IP address and be ready for use. If not, see Setting an IP address.
    • If you bought your phone direct from us, it will already be configured for use with your first Centrex extension. If you bought it from somewhere else, see Configuring the phone.

Setting an IP address

(Only necessary if you do not use DHCP on your network.)

  1. Use the menu navigation buttons to select Configure > Network. (The centre button is to select/OK, up and down to scroll menu items, left and right move the cursor; use Mute to delete mistakes.)
  2. Use the network submenus to enter an IP address, subnet mask, gateway (called “Default Router”) and DNS appropriate for your network. Use the numeric keypad, then the OK button to confirm the value.

Tip: Once you’ve saved the IP address, you can use the web interface (Basic Settings tab) to enter the other network settings. See step 2 below.

Configuring the phone

(Only necessary for phones not purchased from FreeVirtualNumbers. Requires a PC on the same LAN/subnet as the phone!)

  1. After initialisation, the IP address is shown at the bottom of the display. Write it down temporarily for reference. (If not, find the value in the Configure > Network menu as above.)
  2. Type the IP address into your browser like this: http://nnn.nnn.nnn.n nn (replace each nnn by as many digits as appear in the phone display, for example http://192.168.0.120), then use Enter. Enter the password admin. This shows you the phone’s web configuration pages.
  3. Click the Account1 tab at the top.
  4. The important fields here are all provided in your welcome email or the control panel for the first (default) extension:

SIP Server (the SIP server name); Outbound Proxy (the SIP proxy server); SIP User ID and Authenticate ID (your first Centrex extension number); Authenticate Password (your account password set in the Extensions control panel).

  5. Click Update and wait for the changes to be made. Once the page responds to tell you the phone needs rebooting, click Reboot and the phone will register with the Centrex service.

Tip: if you get a “page not found” error instead of the reboot prompt, you will need to start over, as the phone has probably picked up a new IP address in the mean time.

Note: this guide describes how to use the phone with Line 1 set up for the default Centrex extension. By setting up other extensions in the phone configuration, you can get more features, like making and receiving calls for other extensions on specific lines.

To answer a call: activate the headset (if any), or pick up the handset, or press the Speaker button for hands-free operation.

To switch between two calls on lines 1 to 4: press one Line button to put that caller on hold and press the appropriate Line button to speak to the other. The active line is shown by a steady red light, the held one by a flashing light.

To hold the current call: press the Hold button.

To make calls: enter the number using the keypad then pick up the handset or activate the headset, or press the Speaker button to make a hands-free call. The number will be dialled in 4 seconds unless you press the # key or Send button first. (Send without entering a number redials the last called number.)

  • To dial an IP address, select the Direct IP Call menu, and enter the IP as 12 digits (padded with zeroes, no dots).
  • Note: SIP URLs cannot be dialled directly.

To make attended transfers: put the caller on hold by pressing another Line button. Dial the destination number as usual and speak to the recipient. Then press the Trnf button followed by the appropriate Line button for the first caller. Finally, hang up your connection.

To make conference (three-way) calls: with one party on hold and one active call, press the Conf button to join all three parties into a conference call.

To pick up voicemails: dial *1 (or press the Msg button) and enter the voicemail password when prompted (which you will find in the extension details in your VoIP control panel). (If there are waiting messages, the indicator to the right of the display flashes.)
