VoIP: How do I configure my SJphone Software?

A "softphone" is a piece of software that you download to your computer, which combined with FreeVirtualNumbers enables you to experience VoIP technology and experiment with set up and call quality. You will also, ideally, need a headset such as the Plantronics 400 - however, if you have speakers and a microphone with your computer, these will do adequately (although call quality may slightly suffer as the "pickup" from a microphone isn't as good as a headset solution).

SJPhone may be downloaded from SJphone: http://www.sjlabs.com/sjp.html

When you have downloaded it (by selecting the required installation file from the linked directory above), you must configure it - this is a fairly straightforward process and is described briefly below.

  1. Press the menu button on the main display. This is the button in the Middle of the phone that looks like a hammer and a spanner.
  2. Select "Profiles" from the configuration window that appears.
  3. Select "New" from Profiles Menu and give the profile a name such as "Free Virtual Numbers".
Select the Profile type "Calls through SIP Proxy".
  4. Select the "SIP Proxy" Tab from the Profile Options displayed.
  5. Set the Proxy Domain to the registration server name you will have been advised to use in your welcome email (this will look like sip.freevirtualnumbers.co.uk or lon-pbx-X.freevirtualnumbers.co.uk) and set the port number to 5060.
Set the Proxy for NAT to the Outbound Proxy server name you will have been advised to use in your welcome email (this will look like nat.freevirtualnumbers.co.uk) and set the port number to 5082.
  6. Select the DTMF tab of the Profile Options and set the "Send DTMF as:" to be RFC2833
  7. Select OK and you will be presented with the Service information screen.
  8. Enter your 8 digit extension number as your "Username" and your password in the "Password" field. Select the tick box "Save service information permanently" and select OK.
  9. Close the menu window using the cross sign in the upper right corner.
  10. If the SJphone software does not register then you will need to check your PC firewall and your Network firewall settings to make sure that the software is not blocked from accessing the internet and that all relevant Ports are available from the internet to the softphone
  11. Your SJphone installation should now be ready to use! Dial 160 to try the echo test. You should hear everything you say echoed back to you.
